I don't understand how anyone can fail to see Sarah Palin for anything but the trojan horse that she is.  It's like this big neon sign flashing "HILLARY VOTERS!  YOU CAN STILL BRING ESTROGEN TO THE WHITE HOUSE!"  It's such a coddling/pandering move, I'd be insulted if that were my party.  I've generally found that when someone gives you exactly what they think you were looking for, they've got another agenda going on.

I'm waiting for the McCain/Palin t-shirts, on the front "Vote McCain/Palin!", on the back "One less dick in the White House".

For those that read this but don't know me personally or keep in touch that often, I'm apparently free of cancer and done with chemotherapy. I'll likely have follow-up CAT scans every 4 months or so eventually slowing to every 6 months. As expected, the family and I are all quite elated by this news.

Hayden is doing quite well, although he does have fussy nights here and there. He'll be 6 weeks old tomorrow.

Finally...

Strange that it's been a good month since I've written here. Chemo's taken most ambition to do much of anything from me. Thankfully, it's nearly over.

We're also in the final days of baby countdown. He's due on the 22nd, but we kinda expected him to be a bit early. Holly feels alot more pressure in her belly than with the first pregnancy, so she can't wait till the day finally hits. Worst case scenario we're looking at Wednesday the 23rd. They're going to induce if it goes that far.

Expect pictures here when the day finally hits.

So my hair has started falling out. I thought I'd take it a bit easier than I am. For some reason I'm finding it mildly depressing, despite the fact that I look good bald.

Apologies to those that have been waiting to hear how I've been doing. Chemo really kicked my ass. Mostly just made me tired, while robbing of any ambition to do anything. My week was basically 5 days of 4 hour treatments. Each with their own little punch to my kidneys. Joy!

So it's been a little while since I've written anything here, but not much has happened to write about. Friday I finally saw the oncologist. Apparently, there were 2 different types of cancer found: a carcinoma seminoma in the testicle and a terratoma in the abdominal mass. Chemotherapy is due to start next week Monday. To facilitate this, I'm getting a port installed tomorrow. So I guess I've got one more surgery to look forward to.

Surgery went well this morning. Arrived at the hospital at 5:15 this morning, everything went well. I was discharged at 11:30 or so. It's a bit painful, but nothing too horrible. Next step chemotherapy. I should be done with surgery now. Yay!

Now that I've had some time to get my head around the concept, I thought I would share exactly what's going on with me here. It appears that the mass in my abdomen was the result of testicular cancer. The type of tissue in the mass and it's location are consistent with testicular cancer and a mass is visible in my right testicle in a sonogram. The next step is another surgery. Out patient this time. I had an appointment for Monday, but it's been bumped to Tuesday. At this point they will be removing my right testicle. A bit to handle, but much better than the alternative. This will be followed by 3 months of chemotherapy at the end of which I've got a 90-95% chance of being "completely cured".

At one point while talking to the urologist, he mentioned that a few famous people have survived testicular cancer, most notably... (both my wife and I thought Tom Green, but he was thinking) Lance Armstrong. Hey, whatever you can relate to works I guess.

BTW, here's my kick-ass battle scar :)

I was discharged this evening at 6:00 PM EST.  It's a relief to be home.  I've got another surgery come Monday (out-patient this time) which will be followed by 3 months of chemotherapy.

That's all for now.

Outlook is good.

Hello all...this is his wife Holly shoutin' at ya to say that although the surgery took longer, and was much more complex than the doctor anticipated...he pulled out the mass which is a malignant teratoma.  The doctor could not get every single bit because if he tried to much, he would have gotten too close to the veina cava (the main artery) and Dave could have bleed to death.............thankfully the doctor is a very intelligent, well-practiced surgeon or it may have been the worst day of my life.  dave will be in the hospital for at least 4 nights and then off to an oncologist to determine if he will need radiation to treat any remaining cells which could not be removed.  They had to use two units of blood which Dave was surprised about.  I had to put my tasty chocolate shimmer lip gloss on him because that's all I had to moisten his torturously  dry lips and that was pretty funny....he said he would have worn any sort of lipstick it was so bad :)

I just wanted to thank everyone myself before I am off to pick up the child....I cannot get over all of the support and love you all have shown and when Dave gets better we both plan on thanking everyone of you personally some how......Dave has his ways of course, and I am an artist so i'm sure we will come up with something fun to do :)

MUCH LOVE AND THANKS.....Dave needs to be on this earth a lot longer with his heart of gold and little Hayden on the way...HUGE HUGS TO ALL WHO READ THIS AND HAVE HELPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Subject:Less than 24 hours to go.

Less than 24 hours to go till my surgery.  Really looking forward to having some sort of answer on this.  It's expected that I'll be in the hospital 4 or 5 days after surgery, but I'm hoping it's less time than that.  I think I've taken care of all the paperwork I need to deal with for work so that I can receive short term disability while I'm off.  It's strange knowing that it's gonna be some time before I'm sitting at my desk again writing code.

It's been a bit of a crazy week, my father-in-law had prostate surgery on Tuesday just a couple streets over from the hospital I'll be at.  The surgery went well and he's home now recovering.  Yesterday, my father called me to tell me his follow up cat scan (he had lung cancer 8 years ago and now only has one lung) revealed a blood clot and they needed him to come in to the ER at the same hospital I'm having my surgery at.  They admitted him last night, but he'll be coming home later today once they figure out how they're going to proceed.

In other news, I've received amazing support from my friends in the Nine Inch Nails fan community.  Clive Holloway is putting together a bunch of memorabilia auctions on my behalf.  And Matt Dunphy who runs the nin hotline has added my amazon affiliate link for pre-orders of the new Nine Inch Nails remix CD.  I've also received some awesome donations via my paypal account from other fans I've rarely even had conversations with.  Thank you all.

EDIT: An update on my dad.  I picked him up from the hospital and brought him home.  They're putting him on a bunch of blood thinners to break up the clot.  Although, they're not 100% certain that it is a clot.

Mood: optimistic

Had a few appointments since my last entry.  Friday, I was in to see my primary care doctor and ended up getting put on blood pressure medicine as my pressure's been up last few times (and it's better for surgery on the medicine).  Saturday was pre-testing at Buffalo General in preparation for my surgery.  They drew blood, took an EKG, explained what was going to happen on Friday, etc.  I had to fast for my blood work and my appointment wasn't till 3, so I was suffering.  While there the nurse practitioner explained to me that there's always a chance this could be something weird, like maybe I was supposed to be a twin.  So, that's what I'm hoping for.  No long term concerns and it makes for a good story.  Sunday was a leisure day.  No appointments to speak of.  We went to Pumpkinville with Mira and had a blast.  It was a perfect fall day for it and the drive down was great with all the trees turning.  Back at work today, though I did have my pre-op clearance with my primary this morning (thankfully my blood pressure was down finally).  I don't believe I've got anything else on the schedule till the surgery.  The co-pays alone have been killing me these days, so that's a blessing.

Had an MRI this afternoon.  I'm not claustrophobic, but after a while I got a bit anxious and fidgety.  The pictures still "looked good", so I guess I managed well enough.  They think the mass on my liver is a benign growth of blood vessels called a melangioma, so they're not too concerned about it, but they'll keep an eye on it in the future.  The mass in my abdomen is still indeterminant, so the next step is for the surgeon to go in and get a first hand look at it.  It's likely that he will remove the mass (which might be attached in some way to my vena cava) at this point and perform the biopsy.  There is a slight chance they will leave the mass in there if it is determined to be a lymphoma that responds well to chemotherapy.  Surgery is tentatively scheduled for Friday the 19th of October and they're going to open me up (none of that orthoscopic stuff for me (if i could i would)).
